It’s a whole new game in the golf world

We seem to be entering into a new era in golf, and that will affect everyone from the casual fan to tournament sponsors to golf betters in Vegas. Tiger Woods has dominated the game of golf for so long that many people are accustomed to the notion of one dominant player being chased by everyone else in the field. Tiger Woods is an international icon, and his involvement in a tournament boosted ratings and affected sponsorships. Many of the other golf pros were also intimidated by his game.

All of that seems to be changing. It had to change some time – every athlete starts to get older and sees his skills decline. But with Tiger we’ve seen a stunning series of events that have knocked him off his perch.

If you like to bet on golf you need to get used to this “new normal.” Recently, you had a young kid, Rory McIroy, win the US Open after blowing The Masters. Then you had a guy like Darren Clarke win the British Open. Everything is changing, so there’s much more uncertainty. TV ratings are down, but for the golf purists this might be more interesting.

Caddie Steve Williams – The Best Week of His Life

It seems like quite a bit of hyperbole, but caddy Steve Williams was pretty happy after Adam Scott’s victory at Firestone. After his well-publicized breakup with Tiger Woods, many have interpreted his comments as a shot at Tiger.

UPDATE: Williams is getting hammered for his self-centered comments.

Will the golf summit help Obama and Boehner strike a deal?

Most businesspeople understand the importance of golf and other activities in building a relationship that can be helpful in business. This applies to politics as well, as President Obama invited Speaker John Boehner to play a round of golf with the idea of forging a better relationship. The two men are on opposite sides of some intense political battles, but hopefully they got to know each other a little better after what many are calling the “golf summit.”

Golf gloves matter

Golf is a game of precision, and the little things matter. David Medsker reviewed the Hirzl Trust Control gloves:

Let’s state the obvious up front: golf is an expensive sport, and if you’re anything like us, there are certain pieces of equipment where you tend to, well, go cheap. The one area where function completely dominated form in terms of gear has always been the golf glove. Does it come in black? That’ll work, ring us up. Needless to say, when we were asked to review Hirzl’s golf gloves, at first it seemed a bit silly. Now, of course, we know better.

The weather conditions for our initial test were about as ideal as one could ask for – partly cloudy with temperatures in the low 70s. This means that we didn’t get to really test how well the gloves (we used Hirzl’s Trust Control gloves) would function in extreme heat or rain, but you can work up a sweat even on the driving range in weather like that, and the gloves, which contain kangaroo leather (who knew?) with mesh on the tops so your hands can breathe, remained bone dry the entire time.

Check out the entire review.
